When it comes to CT scanners, doctors, diagnosticians, and hospitals need the best of the best. They need imaging equipment that can handle the most advanced medical applications, provide a small footprint, and they have to quickly supply digital images in an easy-to-access manner. Enter: the GE BrightSpeed 16 Slice. It’s built on GE’s Lightspeed VCT technology, which includes the Volara DAS and Xtream FX.

The GE BrightSpeed can be used at major medical centers, urgent care facilities, private practices, and outpatient departments, with top-level performance across the board; It offers a more compact footprint than most machines on the market, and it gives diagnosticians and doctors high-quality images across a wide array of clinical and medical applications.

For those who are less familiar with the technology, CT scanner slices refers to the number of rows of detectors in the z-axis of a CT. The first three generations of scanners are single-slice units, while generations 4-7 have multi-slice capability, with the counts ranging from 4 to 256.

All multiple-slice units can do CT angiography and CT fluoroscopy, and they can take multiple slices in one rotation. This helps reduce scan times without compromising the quality of the images that are provided.

GE’s Brightspeed 16 Slice CT scanner has 16 slice capability, along with the IQ enhance feature (IQE), all of which gives doctors the ability to do faster pitch scanning while covering more anatomical areas. The IQE feature allows it to scan as fast as a 50-slice equivalent CT, without sacrificing image quality. It implements a 3D modulation algorithm that automatically adjusts the milliamperage (mA), and is capable of reducing the necessary X-ray dose by up to 40%.

The newer BrightSpeed scanners include efficiency improvements, a refined operator console, and a table designed that’s specially laid out to improve and speed up workflow. The 16-slice model has an ultra-compact design that gives it one of the smallest footprints on the market and touts sub-second scan times of 0.5 seconds.

BrightSpeed also has bowtie filter technology that can automatically attenuate off-axis X-rays, which in turn allows it to maintain a more uniform X-ray field at the detector point. This also helps minimize the required dose and helps mitigate X-ray scattering effects.

The dose report is presented in a DICOM format that makes it easier to both archive and access. This report provides a clear, precise summary of both the CTDIvol and DLP parameters, which makes it possible to compute the dose according to the parameters received during the scan series.

Other key features include a compact, air-cooled gantry, HiLight/Lumex Detector Technology, and color-coded protocols for pediatric applications that can be used to tune in the settings to suit the weight of each individual child. The rotational times range from 0.5-4 seconds, with a 16 x 0.625 thin-slice scanning capability. There’s also a 53.2 kW high frequency X-ray generator, with tube focal spots of 0.6 x 0.7 and 0.9 x 0.9.
